With regret we convey the news of the death of our esteemed colleague and mentor, the architect Dr Mihailo Čanak.

He participated, both independently and as a co-author, in a series of architectural competitions and he authored a number of awarded designs. Thousands of families live in the flats, which he designed and standardized. He was a central figure in the formation of the Housing Centre of the IMS Institute, which developed the basic methodological and technical settings of habitology research in former Yugoslavia. He is the author of many scientific studies in the field of residential architecture and standardization for the purposes of housing construction.

He was one of the protagonists, and among the most prolific authors of “Belgrade school of residence”. Since 1983, he led one of the first programs of informal education in architecture in Serbia, preparatory classes for the entrance examination at the Faculty of Architecture, which was registered in 1991 as the design office “ARD – Architectural Design & Research”. This program trained thirty generations of students, “mice” as he used to call them. He was a member of the Academy of Architecture of Serbia since 2006.

He received the Lifetime Achievement Award, awarded by the Association of Architects of Serbia in 2005.
